Catalyst Sports is excited to partner with Friends of Patapsco Valley State Park and Montgomery Parks and Rec to bring adaptive mountain biking to the McKeldin Area of the park.

This program is designed for individuals with physical disabilities to experience the thrill of mountain biking

 

What to Expect:

Bike Fittings & Transfers – We’ll ensure you have the right bike and setup for a safe and comfortable ride.
Introductory Instruction – Learn how to ride and control an adaptive mountain bike.
Trail Riding – Enjoy time on up to 5 miles of natural surface mountain bike trails.

Support - Volunteers will ride alongside participants to provide guidance and ensure safety throughout the experience.

smiley Friends are Welcome to ride alongside. They must have their own mountain bike and they must be comfortable riding mountain bike trails. They should register as a Companion Volunteer

 

Essential Eligibility for Adaptive Mountain Biking

  • Rider has a permanent, disabling condition
  • Rider is >= 10 years old
  • Rider is >= 5' tall
  • Rider is < 250 lbs
  • Rider can consistently make safe cognitive decisions in a fast-paced changing environment.
  • Rider can consistently follow all safety precautions identified by the instructors.
  • Rider can hold their head upright without any head and/or neck support.
  • Rider can wear a properly fitted and rated bike helmet, as well as any other safety equipment appropriately.
  • Rider can consistently understand and follow multiple-step instructions from the instructors independently and in a fast-paced environment.
  • Rider can transfer in and out of the bike independently or with some assistance
  • Rider can consistently remain alert and focused for the duration of the ride and can make decisions quickly in variable terrain.
  • Rider can demonstrate they can independently peddle, steer, stop, start and ride the bike over, around, up, and down a variety of natural surface terrain deemed appropriate for their experience level.
  • Rider must be free of pressure wounds.

Things to Bring:

  • Water bottle (Catalyst will have a refilling station)
  • Closed Toe Shoes
  • Helmet is provided but feel free to bring your own
  • Protective Eye wear/Glasses : A limited supply of clear plastic glasses are available for you to borrow
  • Any Personal Medications Needed for Emergency:  Insulin, Epi Pen, Inhaler
  • Optional Sunscreen and Bug Spray
